2002 Commitment To Community Awardee

Southfield-Lathrup Optimist Club

The Southfield-Lathrup Optimist mission is to foster an optimistic way of life, through a network of individuals committed to the development of their potential in order to provide ever-expanding service to the youth in our community.

Club members (nearly 50) meet weekly for breakfast and speaker programs at the Excaliber Restaurant on Northwestern Highway. During that time they also plan and develop activities specifically designed to provide a means to serve our youth in programs that are both fun and that will develop a strong commitment to personal growth and community service.

The Southfield-Lathrup Optimist Club sponsors many annual activities such as:

  • Student of the Month Awards
  • Respect for Law Week
  • Community Building Book Club
  • Holiday Adopt-A-Family program
  • The Oratorical Contest
  • Tri-Star Basketball
  • Junior Golf Tournament
  • Food for students on MEAP testing days
  • Career Day/Job Shadowing
  • Literacy Volunteers for Eisenhower Reads
  • Scholarships for Harry Potter Preview Party
  • National Volunteer Day Sponsor
  • Pictures with the Bunny, the Great Pumpking, and the Daddy Daughter Dance,
Recently the Optimist have adopted 47 youth at Arthur Ashe Academy by sponsoring a 6 week personal development training, and mentoring program and are in the process of establishing a Junior Optimist Club in our community.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself -

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
